Bill of Technology Rights

This week, my students and I embarked on beginning to understand digital citizenship. We kicked it off by having discussion based conversation concerning what it meant to be a digital citizen and have a presence within the social media world. Then we watched a video that highlighted how not being aware and social media and following some basic rules, could train wreck  a successful person. The video showcased a decorated swimmer who was going to college on a scholarship. His parents were proud of him, his teammates respected him, and his teachers praised him. He made a poor decision to drink at a party and then made an even worse decision when he posted pictures of him doing so on the internet. As a result of his actions and postings, he could lose his scholarship, the respect of his parents and teachers, and be kicked off the swimming team. My students and I discussed some other issues that could result due to social media. We then tried to problem solve how issues like Eduardo's and the swimming team could be avoided.
I suggested to the students that there were readings that existed that explained how to properly have an existence on the internet and how to be a good digital citizen. We looked at some of those and then decided that we would write a pledge or a "rule" for ourselves within our classroom.
In the AUP for the state of WV 3.1 of the policy states: An effective public education system develops students who are globally aware, engaged within their communities, and capable of managing their lives and careers to succeed in a digital world".
Since our state values the importance of being able to succeed in a digital world, it's of essence of our students to understand the foundation of being a digital citizen in a digital world. In creating a pledge together, after we have explored the policies and meanings, it will help us to better fulfill the statement made by the WV Dept. of Education.





After we came up with the pledge for our class, I asked the students to reflect on the activity and to express how they will apply it their daily lives. Below are two of the students responses:


After we completed this activity, I realized that the majority of students already know in general that they should be mindful when they are using social media. They know that they should follow copyright laws and they know that they could possibly get in trouble for not doing so. When we attempt to convey to students the risks of underage drinking and driving, we often times bring in guest speakers. Either law enforcement officers, paramedics, or close relatives affected by drinking and driving speak to the students. This really helps more than a video like the one we watched. In the future I think that I would have the discussion, I liked the guiding questions but I would have a guest speak to accompany the video and questions.
